What is Oxygen therapy? Oxygen therapy is the administration of oxygen as a therapeutic modality. Oxygen therapy benefits the patient by increasing the supply of oxygen to the lungs and thereby increasing the availability of oxygen to the body tissues. Effective January 1, 2006, the total number of required Medicare payments for rented oxygen equipment was 36 continuous months. After 36 continuous months of rental, the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 requires that ownership for the stationary and/or portable oxygen equipment must be transferred from the supplier to the beneficiary.
